Rates

30-Year Conventional Mortgage Rate (MORTG). This site will give you a good idea of what rate you will be able to get on a 30-year fixed, conventional loan if you have good credit (740+). Thanks to the folks at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. This is one of my favorite sites for economic data.

Federal Reserve Rates (H.15) - Most current, raw data. Updated daily. Pay special attention to the "Bank prime loan" rate, the "Conventional mortgages" rate and if you have an ARM, the "Treasury constant maturities", one year, weekly average.

Forcasts of Future Rates - Want a best guess at what the rates will be in the future? Check out this site.

Zillow Mortgage Rate Estimator - Based on actual quotes being giving to other customers in real time. Also, they have a tool that will email you when rates hit a certain level.

Savings Bonds

I-Bonds (Inflation protected US government savings Bonds) are a great option for individual investors who want to preserve capital. There is a one-year minimum time-frame and they have two interest components. There are also some limits as to how much you can purchase each year. You can learn all about them at the link above. I-Bond rates are adjusted every six months and are calculated using the following formula: [Fixed rate + (2 x Semiannual inflation rate) + (Fixed rate x Semiannual inflation rate)].
